Slant Wheel
The Slant Wheel Concept is a staple in the quick game. It is a variation of the slant arrow concept. You can find both of these concepts in the Quick Game section of the Air Raid Playbook.
I love the slant wheel because of it’s simplicity. It’s a 2 man read. The QB is going to pick his favorite side of the field, then read slant, wheel, check down. The key coaching points for your QB are the same as they always are in quick game. Get the ball out quick to the first open guy in the progression.
In this video we do a nice job of executing the slant wheel concept. Make sure your outside receivers break flat. This keeps soft coverage from being able to undercut the route. Once they find the open area the can break down a little bit and sit in the soft spot. The wheel route can be thrown back shoulder or over the top depending on the coverage.
the best time to run slant wheel is against man, Cover 2, and cover 4. It’s also a great play on the goaline. If you know you are going to get press, the slant and the wheel creates a natural rub. One of your guys is going to pop open.
